I hope you find these checklists useful in navigating this difficult time, and getting the best care possible for your pet.
I decided to create these checklists after losing my beloved dog Ozzy from a sudden and very traumatic decline due to an undiagnosed brain tumour. One of the hardest things in grieving his passing has been wishing I had been able to think more clearly to make decisions about his diagnosis, treatment and ultimately the euthanasia.
Eventually, I realized that I was in a significant state of shock and denial when he got sick. Learning about the reactions of our brains in high stress situations has helped me understand why I couldn’t think clearly, and has allowed me some self-forgiveness.
I wanted to create these checklists for anyone who finds themselves in a pet emergency, because I know how hard it is to think clearly and how much support we need in these situations. Much of the support that is available when our human loved ones get sick simply isn’t available when it comes to our pets, so we have to take on a lot more responsibility ourselves and it can be absolutely overwhelming.
I hope that you will find these checklists helpful and I wish you all the best with your pet. I have everything crossed for a good outcome for your loved one.
